The Goals

Anthony Gordon needed barely two minutes. The England winger beat two defenders on the edge of the area and scored with a shot that deflected off Mario Martín. It was his first goal for Barcelona.

Gabriel Jesus, making his first start for the club, added the second on the half-hour. He pressed the Getafe defence, won the ball and finished across the goalkeeper. According to the club, he has had three shots on target since joining and has scored with all three.

Jules Koundé scored the third in the second half, turning in a cross from Lamine Yamal, the AFP news agency reported.

Without Raphinha

Barcelona were missing Raphinha, their leading scorer. The club described it as a minor thigh problem; AFP reported that he was hurt while on international duty with Brazil.

It made little difference. Barcelona had almost 85 percent of possession in the second half, and Getafe goalkeeper David Soria made several saves to keep the score down.

The Records

  • Eight wins from eight in LaLiga equals the club’s best start to a league season, set under Gerardo “Tata” Martino in 2013–14
  • Nine wins from nine in all competitions, including the Champions League win over Feyenoord, is a new club record. The previous best was eight, in 1925–26
  • 194 appearances for Koundé makes him the French player with the most games for Barcelona, passing Eric Abidal
  • 100 appearances for defender Gerard Martín

The Table

The win left Barcelona five points clear of second-placed Atlético Madrid, who beat Alavés 2-1, AFP reported. Real Madrid stayed six points behind after their own win later that day.

What Comes Next

Barcelona’s next league match is away to Real Betis at La Cartuja. A win there would equal the LaLiga record for the best start to a season: nine straight wins, set by Real Madrid in 1968–69.

Before that they travel to Istanbul to play Galatasaray on Tuesday, their first away match in this season’s Champions League. The Clásico against Real Madrid follows later in the month.
