Jamal Musiala, born in Stuttgart in 2003 and raised in England, is Bayern Munich’s attacking midfielder and shared the Euro 2024 Golden Boot with three goals. He scored in Bayern’s 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt on matchday 1 of this season’s Champions League.
Jamal Musiala was born on 26 February 2003 in Stuttgart, Germany, to a Nigerian-British father, Daniel Richard, and a German mother with Polish roots, Carolin Musiala. He lived in Fulda until he was seven, then moved with his family to England, where he stayed for the rest of his childhood. He went to Corpus Christi School in New Malden, represented it for local clubs including Fulham, Brentford and Wimbledon in the EFL Kids Cup, which he won twice, and for secondary school attended Whitgift School in Croydon.
He spent the last years of his childhood at Chelsea Academy, where he met Michael Olise, who would later also join Bayern. He played for both Germany and England at youth level and pledged his allegiance to the German Football Association in February 2021. At 16, he and his mother returned to Germany for personal reasons and because of the impending Brexit, and in July 2019 he left Chelsea to join Bayern Munich.
His professional debut came on 3 June 2020 as a substitute for Bayern Munich II in a 3-2 win over Preußen Münster, and on 20 June he made his Bundesliga debut against SC Freiburg, becoming the youngest player to appear for Bayern in the league at 17 years and 115 days. He was part of the squad that won the 2019-20 Champions League, though he did not play in the competition that season.
His breakthrough followed quickly. On 18 September 2020 he scored his first Bundesliga goal in an 8-0 win over Schalke, becoming Bayern’s youngest goalscorer at 17 years and 205 days. He made his Champions League debut on 3 November 2020 against Red Bull Salzburg, and scored his first Champions League goal on 23 February 2021 in a 4-1 win at Lazio, aged 17 years and 363 days, which made him the competition’s youngest scorer of both English and German nationality and Bayern’s youngest in Europe. He signed his first professional contract, until 2026, on 5 March 2021.
He has been a regular for Germany since 2021, representing the team at two European Championships (2020 and 2024) and two World Cups (2022 and 2026). At Euro 2024 he was the joint winner of the Golden Boot, with three goals in the tournament. He is regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders in the world.
This season began well. In Bayern’s 5-0 opening win over Bodø/Glimt, Musiala scored alongside Harry Kane, Alphonso Davies and Michael Olise, who got two. Bayern then drew 3-3 at Viking on matchday 2, a game in which Olise was sent off. Musiala and Olise, who met as schoolboys at Chelsea, are now two of the key attacking players in a Bayern side that has dropped only two points so far, and the German remains central to national-team plans.
