The 2026/27 European football season is underway, with the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 already producing early surprises. Germany’s Bundesliga is next, while Formula 1 and tennis have also delivered major headlines.
The new European football season has wasted little time producing drama. Four of Europe’s traditional “top five” leagues have now begun their 2026/27 campaigns, with defending champions, ambitious newcomers and several heavyweight clubs immediately finding themselves under the spotlight.
The Premier League opened on August 21, followed by the return of La Liga and Serie A, while Ligue 1 began its campaign with Marseille making an emphatic statement. Germany’s Bundesliga will officially get underway on August 28.
Premier League: Arsenal Begin With Authority, Manchester United Stunned
The English season began with defending champions Arsenal hosting newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal delivered a statement of intent, winning 3-0 through goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard. The result gave Mikel Arteta a winning start to his title defence and underlined the depth available to the champions.
But the biggest headlines of the opening weekend came from the promoted sides.
Hull City produced one of the weekend’s biggest shocks by defeating Manchester United 2-0, with Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scoring in a result that immediately raised questions about United’s readiness for the new campaign. Hull had not beaten United in the league for 52 years.
Ipswich Town also made an impressive return to the top flight, defeating Sunderland 2-1 thanks to a late Jack Clarke goal.
Tottenham endured another difficult afternoon, suffering a 3-0 defeat at Brentford, while Chelsea began their campaign with a 3-2 victory over Fulham. Brighton also made an impressive start, defeating Aston Villa 4-0.
Manchester City, meanwhile, came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1, with substitute Rayan Cherki playing a decisive role. Liverpool and Newcastle produced an entertaining 2-2 draw.
The opening round suggested that the Premier League could be unusually unpredictable this season. Two of the three promoted teams won their opening fixtures—a feat achieved only a handful of times previously.
La Liga: Barcelona Make a Flying Start
Spain’s top division has also provided an early glimpse of what could become another Barcelona-Real Madrid title battle.
Champions Barcelona opened their campaign with a spectacular 5-0 victory away to Elche, immediately demonstrating the attacking quality that helped them dominate last season. The result was the biggest away win recorded during the opening phase of the campaign.
Barcelona’s strong start puts additional pressure on Real Madrid, who began their campaign against Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabéu. Madrid entered the season determined to challenge Barcelona’s domestic dominance, with Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham among the headline names.
Elsewhere, Sevilla defeated Rayo Vallecano 2-1, recovering from a difficult performance to claim all three points through two penalties.
The early fixtures have already suggested that the title race could once again revolve around Barcelona and Madrid, although Atlético Madrid and several ambitious clubs will attempt to disrupt that familiar order.
Serie A: Inter Begin Their Title Defence
Italy’s Serie A returned with Inter Milan entering the campaign as defending champions.
Inter’s opening fixture against newly promoted Monza was particularly symbolic. The Nerazzurri entered the season looking to build on their previous championship success, while Monza faced the immediate challenge of competing against one of Italy’s strongest sides. Serie A confirmed that Inter-Monza would be one of the opening fixtures of the campaign.
The new season also features a potentially open title race. Inter remain among the favourites, but Napoli, Juventus, Milan and Roma all have ambitions of challenging near the top.
AC Milan’s opening fixture was particularly significant because they began away at Torino, while Juventus also entered the campaign looking to rebuild their challenge for the Scudetto. Milan’s official schedule confirmed Torino as their opening opponent.
Early individual performances have already attracted attention, with Antonio Vergara, Pio Esposito and Adrien Rabiot among the players highlighted for impressive Matchday 1 displays.
Ligue 1: Marseille Make the Biggest Statement
France produced perhaps the most emphatic opening performance of Europe’s major leagues.
Marseille destroyed Strasbourg 4-0 at the Stade Vélodrome, with Amine Gouiri scoring twice as Marseille immediately announced their ambitions. Strasbourg were reduced to 10 men, but Marseille’s performance was convincing from start to finish.
Paris Saint-Germain, meanwhile, began their title defence against Rennes. PSG remain the overwhelming favourites after another period of domestic and European dominance, but their opening fixture was considerably more competitive than Marseille’s.
Rennes pushed PSG hard before Ferran Torres emerged as the difference-maker, allowing the champions to escape with an important result. The performance offered an early indication that PSG may face stronger resistance from the chasing pack this season.
Lens and Lyon are also expected to compete for European positions, while Monaco remain one of the clubs capable of challenging PSG’s dominance.
Bundesliga: Bayern’s Defence Begins This Weekend
Unlike the other four major leagues, Germany’s Bundesliga has not yet kicked off as of August 26.
The 2026/27 season begins on August 28, with Bayern Munich facing VfB Stuttgart. Bayern enter the campaign as the dominant force in German football after another highly successful season.
One of the intriguing storylines will be whether anyone can prevent Bayern from extending their domestic dominance. Schalke’s return to the Bundesliga is another major storyline, while Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and other established clubs will attempt to close the gap.
The Bundesliga opener therefore promises to complete the first major chapter of Europe’s new domestic season.
Formula 1: Norris Wins Dramatic Dutch Grand Prix
Away from football, Formula 1 produced one of the weekend’s biggest sporting spectacles.
Lando Norris won the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. The race was particularly dramatic because reigning champion Max Verstappen crashed out.
The event also marked the final Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort after the venue’s six-year return to the Formula 1 calendar, adding an emotional element to Norris’s victory.
Tennis: Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz Knocked Out
The US Open has already delivered one of the most unusual tennis stories of the year.
Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz teamed up in the newly revamped mixed-doubles competition, attracting enormous attention. Their run ended in the quarter-finals when they lost to Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli.
Williams’ return to competitive tennis at 44, following a four-year absence, has been one of the tournament’s biggest stories. The US Open’s new mixed-doubles format has also generated considerable interest, featuring shorter sets and a $1 million prize pool.
Meanwhile, former US Open champion Stan Wawrinka announced an emotional farewell after failing to receive a wildcard for the tournament during what is expected to be his final professional season.
Cricket: Women’s Asia Cup Set to Begin
Cricket is also moving into another major tournament phase.
The Women’s Asia Cup 2026 begins in Dubai on August 28, with eight teams competing in the T20 tournament. Sri Lanka enter as defending champions, while India will again be among the leading contenders.
The tournament will also feature the highly anticipated India-Pakistan rivalry. India’s Harmanpreet Kaur has already acknowledged the unique pressure surrounding matches between the two countries, with India and Pakistan scheduled to meet in the group stage on September 5.
In men’s cricket, Pakistan have been preparing for their Test series against England, although Babar Azam will miss the first Test after suffering an injury, with Salman Agha named captain.
