Net Worth and Rank
- Forbes 2026 list: No. 77, with $30 billion, listed as “Lyndal Stephens Greth & family”
- Source of wealth: the family’s ownership of Endeavor, and the proceeds of its sale
Autry Stephens
Autry Carl Stephens (1938–2024) was born in De Leon, Texas, the fourth of five children of a watermelon and peanut farmer. He studied petroleum engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1961 and a master’s in 1962.
- 1962–1979: he worked as a petroleum engineer for Humble Oil and then as an engineer and loan officer at First National Bank of Midland
- 1979: he used his life savings to buy 80 acres and drill his first well in the Spraberry Trend
- 2000: he founded Endeavor Energy Resources as the successor to his sole proprietorship
The Diamondback Deal
After Stephens was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he sold the company to provide liquidity for his family. In September 2024, a month after his death, Diamondback Energy acquired Endeavor for $26 billion, including $8 billion in cash with the rest in stock. According to press reports, Endeavor was one of the largest private oil producers in the United States, with about 327,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day in 2024 and drilling rights on more than 500,000 acres, mainly in Texas.
Why It Matters
The Diamondback deal was one of the largest oil deals in years, and much of the Stephens family’s wealth is likely tied to the cash and shares it received. Because few personal details about Greth are public, her fortune is an estimate.
