Nicolas Cage told a New York Comic Con crowd he is “probably gonna do another season of television” and “might do a season of True Detective”. He also said he is “not an AI friendly actor” and is probably not going to work with Prime Video again. HBO had not commented.

Nicolas Cage made two headlines at a Saturday “Spotlight” panel at New York Comic Con on October 10, The Hollywood Reporter and Rolling Stone reported.

‘True Detective’ Season 5

Asked about his career, Cage said he needs to move between film and television: “You can only do so many movies back to back to back, and necessity is the mother of invention. What do I mean by necessity? Feed the family; don’t do too many movies back to back to back. So I think I’m probably gonna do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective.”

He then joked: “That’s okay that I’m the first to announce that, right? My agent’s out there somewhere listening.”

Rolling Stone described this as all but confirming year-old rumours. The Hollywood Reporter said HBO did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the reports include no official confirmation.

What Was Known Before

  • As far back as August 2025, Cage was rumoured to star in season five, Rolling Stone said, citing Variety
  • Issa López, who wrote and ran season four (Night Country), is reportedly returning as showrunner, with the season set in Jamaica Bay, New York
  • In May, Cage said he had “no idea” about the show’s status: “I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking.”

On AI and Prime Video

Cage’s most recent television role was in Prime Video’s Spider-Noir, which did not continue beyond one season. Talking about the future of acting, he said:

“How do you survive AI? Amazon is a very AI friendly company to the tune of 50 billion dollars invested to OpenAI. I am not an AI friendly actor. I didn’t sign the waiver to let them use AI on Spider-Noir. It’s kind of like I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again. But that’s OK.”

The $50 billion figure is Cage’s own and was not checked in the reports.

Looking to Gen Z Directors

Cage said he wants to work with younger filmmakers “who are Gen Z and they’re going at it their own way, whether it’s through the YouTube culture or whatever it is. They’re doing it from scratch and by hand.”

He is currently working on the film Perish in Minneapolis, and also mentioned a film called The Prince that has not yet been released.
