Prime Video’s “Blade Runner 2099” brought a new trailer to New York Comic Con. Set 50 years after “Blade Runner 2049”, it imagines a world where the Replicants have won the war with humanity. Michelle Yeoh plays a Replicant Blade Runner at the end of her lifespan.

The cast and creator of Blade Runner 2099 appeared at New York Comic Con and unveiled a new trailer for the Prime Video limited series, Vulture reported.

The Setup

The series is set 50 years after Blade Runner 2049. The conflict between humans and the artificial beings known as Replicants has become outright war, and humans lost.

Creator Silka Luisa (Shining Girls) said the show is about “what happens when our time as a species ends… can we accept that loss, and hold onto our humanity?”

Michelle Yeoh’s Role

Michelle Yeoh plays Olwen, a Replicant Blade Runner who is at the end of her lifespan and goes on one last hunt, in which she crosses paths with Cora (Hunter Schaefer), a human posing as a Replicant. As in the films, the story is told as a detective case.

“I don’t want to be a mere human,” Yeoh joked to the crowd. She said that, because Replicants are meant to be hard to tell from humans, she settled on empathy as the difference: “When you show concern for another person — [Replicants] are more about just doing things.”

A Different Look

Luisa said Replicants are in control but “are made in our image, so they have our desires”. A Replicant red-light district, she said, sells “experiences” rather than sex. The trailer shows a Replicant woman holding a prosthetic belly and an animatronic baby, umbilical cord still attached.

For the visuals, Luisa said: “It’s about a birth — the birth of a city, a society, a new era. When I think of birth, I think: hot, sticky, chaotic. That informs the look of the show.” Vulture said the clips give a sense that the place smells, with people sweating under a golden haze.

Matthew Needham plays a cop who, in one scene, identifies where people come from by their smell.
