Everton are on the market again. The Friedkin Group, the American owner that bought the club in December 2024, says it is exploring investment and a possible sale of a controlling stake. Manager David Moyes admitted he was surprised.

Everton are for sale again, after their American owner announced on Friday, October 9, that it was exploring investment options and a potential sale, ESPN reported.

The Texas-based Friedkin Group, led by the billionaire Dan Friedkin, completed its purchase of the club only in December 2024.

What the Club Said

Everton said the group’s options included the “potential sale of a controlling interest”.

“We will only entertain interest from parties who we strongly believe will be the right stewards to take the club forward and build on the momentum that has been established,” the statement said.

It explained the owner’s reasoning. “When TFG became custodians of Everton, the club faced significant financial uncertainty and challenges both on and off the pitch,” it said. The priority had been to provide stability and investment, “including helping to bring the long-promised stadium to completion”.

“With that foundation now safely in place, the time is right to consider the next chapter for Everton.”

Moyes: ‘I Was Surprised’

Manager David Moyes did not hide his reaction.

“I was surprised because they only came in a year and a half ago. Most owners come in a lot longer than that,” he said at a news conference on Friday.

“I think we were all expecting them to be here for the next 20 to 30 years. I truly believed we had new ownership who were in it completely with us all.”

Moyes said last month that he had never spoken to Dan Friedkin.

A Club Used to Uncertainty

The Friedkin takeover ended the turbulent eight-year ownership of Farhad Moshiri and a long saga over the club’s future, which included the collapse of a proposed buyout by the Miami-based investment firm 777 Partners.

The announcement follows what Moyes called a “difficult summer”, in which Everton sold their star player, Iliman Ndiaye.
