Zohran Mamdani’s unconventional methods has invited mixed reactions from all classes. Let’s hope he makes the city better.
Zohran Mamdani was born to Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani in Kampala, Uganda, at 18 October 1991. He moved to New York with his parents when he was 7 years old. He went to Bowdoin College and graduated in Africana Studies, and married Rama Duwaji in 2025. At just 35 years, he’s too young for politics, but has done some work to win the approval of common New Yorkers. His unconventional communication style has brought a lot of enthusiasm from young public.
Mamdani hasn’t done something massive, but he’s done basic stuff that people love, like affordable cost of living, he has tried to lower the prices of everyday essential, and making it easier for people. The hosuing agenda of the administration has made rent and affordable housing central to the agenda. His politics is described as ‘pothole politics’ as it works for basic infrastrucutre like broken fence, potholes etc.
One of his strongest points is his strong communication. He uses direct accessible language that reach to the youth, using slangs to make himself relatable. His effective use of Social Media is also praised for direct communication and being present on the ground reality rather than sitting in an office. His ability to turn complicated policies into simple messages is something that’s very useful.
Housing has been the centrepiece of Mamdani’s agenda, as he plans to build and preserve hundreds of thousands of affordable homes over the next decade. He’s been pretty vocal about the protection of tenants protection from negligent landlords who exploit tenants. His argument places housing as a necessity rather than an investment.
His economic vision entails democratic-socialist approach, working for the middle class citizens, and improving taxation, public services and redistribution. He has clearly made his attempt to raise taxes on ultra rich in order to increase revenue from wealthy individuals who see properties as mere investment, without living in it. It’s great that he want to work for the middle class workers, but he needs to be on good terms with the riches too.
It’s not like Mamdani is perfect as a politician, he may have some shortcoming that we may have to talk about. One thing is implementation, he announces ambitious projects, but the follow-up is rather slow. The fiscal concerns are always something to work on as he continues to raise taxes on the rich, who are major source of income in a city like NYC.
Zohran Mamdani has mixed reaction during his tenure so far, strong appreciation from working class, while drawing criticism for raising taxes substantially for the wealthy. The question is, whether he will be able to continue the politics and make his political career a long lasting one.
New York is the biggest city in the world. Zohran has power to influence the city in any way he want, so he needs to know how he’ll steer the city to make it better.
