Keanu Reeves, born in Beirut and raised in Toronto, has led films from Speed to The Matrix and John Wick over four decades.

Beirut to Toronto

Keanu Charles Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on 2 September 1964. After his parents divorced in 1966, his mother moved the family to Sydney and then New York, and they later settled in Toronto. He made his acting debut in the Canadian series Hangin’ In (1984) and his feature debut in Youngblood (1986).

The Roles

His breakthrough came with Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989). He became an action star in Point Break (1991) and Speed (1994), and found greater stardom as Neo in The Matrix (1999). After a period of limited commercial success he returned with John Wick (2014–present). He also voiced Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4 (2019) and Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024).

Beyond Acting

Reeves plays in the band Dogstar, co-created the BRZRKR comic franchise and co-founded ARCH Motorcycle. The New York Times ranked him the fourth-greatest actor of the 21st century in 2020, and Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in 2022.

Charity and Public Image

Reeves founded a private cancer foundation after his sister’s battle with leukaemia. It supports children’s hospitals and cancer research, and he has said he prefers not to attach his name to it. In June 2020 he volunteered for Camp Rainbow Gold, a children’s cancer charity in Idaho.
