The Fed’s table shows consumer goods output up 0.7 percent in September, construction supplies up 1.0 percent, and materials up 0.7 percent. Business equipment output was unchanged in the month but 6.7 percent higher than a year earlier.

Why It Matters

Output is above its year-earlier level and utilization is rising, but it remains below the long-run average. The 0.7 percent gain was helped by a 3.5 percent rise in utilities output, while manufacturing rose by a smaller 0.3 percent.
