Anthony Gordon, born in Liverpool in 2001, moved from Newcastle United to Barcelona in 2026 on a deal reportedly worth €80 million. He scored on his first Champions League start for Barcelona in their 4-1 win at Galatasaray on 13 October 2026.
Anthony Michael Gordon was born on 24 February 2001 in Liverpool, and is of Irish and Scottish descent. He joined Everton as an 11-year-old after being released from Liverpool’s academy. His first-team debut came on 7 December 2017 as an 88th-minute substitute in a 3-0 Europa League win at Apollon Limassol, and his Premier League debut followed on 18 January 2020 in a 1-1 draw with West Ham. He signed a new five-year contract in September 2020, and in February 2021 spent the rest of the season on loan at Preston North End.
At Everton he scored his first goals in a 3-2 loss to Brighton on 2 January 2022, and on 9 April 2022 he scored the only goal of a win over Manchester United. In May 2022 he was named Young Player of the Year by the senior team and supporters. He asked to leave in the 2022-23 season and joined Newcastle United on 29 January 2023 for a reported initial £40 million, rising to £45 million.
After a slow start, he scored his first Newcastle goal in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea on the last day of 2022-23, and in 2023-24 earned Newcastle’s Player of the Season award. Although suspended for the final, he scored in both legs of the 2025 EFL Cup semi-final win over Arsenal, helping Newcastle win their first major domestic trophy in 70 years.
On 21 October 2025 he scored in a 3-0 win over Benfica, becoming the first Newcastle player to score in three consecutive Champions League matches. On 18 February 2026 he scored four goals in a 6-1 win over Qarabağ in the Champions League play-offs, his first senior hat-trick, which made him the first Newcastle player to score four in a game in European competition and only the second Englishman, after Harry Kane, to score ten Champions League goals in a single campaign.
On 29 May 2026 he joined Barcelona on a five-year contract starting on 1 July, a deal reportedly worth €80 million. He made his official debut on 23 August, providing two assists in a 5-0 win at Elche, and scored his first goal for the club on 10 October 2026 in a 3-0 win against Getafe.
He has represented England from under-18 and under-20 level, and made his under-21 debut in November 2021, scoring twice. This week, on his first Champions League start for Barcelona, he scored in the 53rd minute at Galatasaray in the 4-1 win. It was his first Champions League goal for the club and showed how quickly he has settled in Catalonia. He had made his Newcastle debut on 4 February 2023 as a substitute in a 1-1 draw with West Ham, and in August 2025 was sent off against Liverpool after a VAR review of a challenge on Virgil van Dijk, a reminder of the combative edge in his play.
