Kimi Antonelli arrives at the US Grand Prix with a 102-point lead and his first chance to clinch the 2026 Formula 1 title, but he needs to win in Austin and for both Mercedes team-mate George Russell and Lewis Hamilton to finish well down the order.
Kimi Antonelli leads the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ championship with 340 points after finishing third in Singapore, and he has his first mathematical chance of securing the title at the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, according to Grandprix.com. The race is on Sunday, 25 October, as part of a weekend that runs from 23 to 25 October and begins the final six-race stretch of the season.
The standings, as listed by ESPN, show Antonelli on 340 points, his Mercedes team-mate George Russell second on 238, Lewis Hamilton third on 229, Max Verstappen fourth on 221, Charles Leclerc fifth on 215 and Lando Norris sixth on 201. Oscar Piastri is seventh with 138, followed by Isack Hadjar on 97, Liam Lawson on 75 and Pierre Gasly on 41. Antonelli’s lead over Russell is 102 points, and over Hamilton it is 111.
The clinching scenario in Austin has three parts, all of which must happen together, according to Grandprix.com. Antonelli must win the race, which would take him to 365 points. Russell must finish ninth or lower, which would limit him to a maximum of 240 points, and Hamilton must finish fifth or lower, which would limit him to 239. If those things happen, no rival could mathematically catch him over the five races that remain after Austin.
The numbers behind that are as follows. After Austin there will be five races left, and a win is worth 25 points, so a driver can gain at most 125 more points in them, according to the report’s calculation of 25 points a race. A lead of 125 points is therefore enough to be safe, according to the source, which adds that Antonelli would also hold the tie-break on wins, with nine victories against three for Russell. Whether sprint races on the remaining calendar change the arithmetic is not addressed in the sources reviewed, so the scenario should be treated as the report’s own calculation.
The calendar after Austin is Mexico City on 1 November, São Paulo on 8 November, Las Vegas on 21 November, Qatar on 29 November and Abu Dhabi on 6 December, according to the report. That means that if he does not clinch in Austin the title could still be settled in the following races, since his lead of 102 points is large with 150 points on offer in six grands prix.
The title fight is within Mercedes, which has also dominated the constructors’ standings. The report says that Mercedes leads Ferrari by 134 points with 215 points still available, and that it cannot clinch the constructors’ title in Austin. Hamilton is third in the drivers’ standings, 111 points behind the leader.
Red Bull is described by a search summary as entering the weekend in improved form, while Ferrari and McLaren are fighting for places behind Mercedes. Verstappen is fourth in the standings, 119 points behind Antonelli, so his title hopes depend on a very large swing in the remaining races.
The sources reviewed do not give Antonelli’s age or career record, so no comparison with other champions is made here. What the figures do show is that his nine wins this season are three times Russell’s total, which is the basis of the tie-break argument.
The formula for the weekend is therefore simple to state and hard to achieve: Antonelli wins, Russell is outside the top eight and Hamilton is outside the top four. Delima News will report the result of the race on 25 October.
