Stefanos Tsitsipas and Hubert Hurkacz came through their opening matches at the Shanghai Masters on Thursday. Britain’s Cameron Norrie was beaten by a qualifier, and home wildcard Bu Yunchaokete gave the crowd a win.

The opening round of the Shanghai Masters continued on Thursday, October 8, with two well-known names moving through and one notable casualty, according to results published by the ATP Tour.

The tournament is one of the ATP’s Masters 1000 events and runs from October 7 to 18.

Tsitsipas and Hurkacz Through

Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece beat the Belgian qualifier Kimmer Coppejans 6-3, 7-5.

Hubert Hurkacz of Poland defeated Australia’s James Duckworth 6-3, 7-6(4).

Norrie Out

The upset of the day came from the Czech qualifier Dalibor Svrcina, who beat Britain’s Cameron Norrie 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Another qualifier, Pavel Kotov, knocked out Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands 6-4, 7-6(4).

A Home Win

Chinese wildcard Bu Yunchaokete gave the Shanghai crowd something to cheer, beating France’s Luca Van Assche 7-6(3), 6-3.

Comebacks

Four players won after losing the first set. Spain’s Pablo Carreño Busta beat Mariano Navone 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Sebastián Báez of Argentina and Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands both recovered from dropping the opening set 6-1, winning by the identical score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli also came from a set down, beating the qualifier Ilia Simakin 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Four Argentine players were among the day’s 18 winners listed by the ATP: Báez, Tirante, Ugo Carabelli and Cerúndolo. Two others, Navone and Díaz Acosta, were beaten.
