Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka have signed up for the 1 Point Slam, the Australian Open event in which every match is decided by a single point and amateurs play the professionals for one million Australian dollars. An unknown local amateur won it last year.

Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka and Jannik Sinner are among the players who will take part in the Australian Open’s 1 Point Slam in January, ESPN reported.

Organisers announced the line-up at the tournament’s launch on Thursday, October 8.

How It Works

Every match lasts exactly one point. The draw is a knockout that mixes men and women, professionals, amateurs and celebrities.

  • Prize: one million Australian dollars, about US$700,000
  • Final: January 13, at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne
  • Australian Open main draw: January 17 to 31

Qualifying is already under way at clubs across Australia. Two more days of qualifying will be held during the tournament’s opening week.

Last Year’s Winner

The event produced a remarkable result last January.

Jordan Smith, a little-known local amateur, beat Sinner on his way to the title and became a millionaire.

He won the final on the third stroke of the point, when Joanna Garland, ranked 117th in the women’s game, hit a two-handed backhand wide.

The Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou also took part. He was knocked out without hitting a ball, by an ace.

The Thinking Behind It

“At the heart of the creation of the 1 Point Slam is our desire to even more deeply connect the Australian Open to every tennis community in the country,” said Andrew Abdo, the new chief executive of Tennis Australia.

A Growing Tournament

More than 1.3 million fans attended the 2026 Australian Open.

Organisers plan to increase viewing capacity and seating, and to provide more shade around Melbourne Park, for next year.
